The community of Bayard is in Duval County south of Jacksonville in the state of Florida. It has a history dating back to 1884 and was planned as a midpoint between the city of Jacksonville and St Augustine. Despite being relatively small, Bayard had its own racecourse which held thoroughbred races in the early 1920s when the track was known as Kinney Park. Thirty years later the same track staged harness racing under floodlights on 4th March 1953 when known as Ponce De Leon. By 1970 the racecourse became the quaintly named Gator Downs, staging harness races from 1970 to 1972 and switching to quarter horse racing between 1972 and 1974. Racing finally came to an end on 9th August 1974 when the track was relaunched as a greyhound track named St Johns Greyhound Park. Although no racing takes place on the site, the ground still remains derelict. |
